280SE W116
The Mercedes-Benz W116 was produced from Sept. 1972 until Sept. 1980. It was the first Mercedes to be officially called S-Class. Initially three engine versions were available, the Solex carburetor equipped 280S and the Bosch D-Jetronic equipped 280SE. Above them was the 350SE with V8 engine (M116).
450SEL W116
In early 1973 a 4.5 L engine (M117) was added for a 450SE and 450SEL. Both cars came with an upgraded interior with either velour or leather seats as standard. In most markets the engine offered 225 hp. New emission regulations limited the output in the US to 190 hp
6.9 W116
In March 1974 the top-of-the-line 450SEL with 6.9 L engine (M100) was unveiled. Seen as the successor to the 300SEL 6.3 W109, it did not use that car’s air suspension, but a self-leveling hydropneumatic suspension, first seen on a Citroen in 1954. In the US the car was just called 6.9
6.9 W116
Although the 6.9 was the most expensive car Mercedes had to offer in North America (except for the 600 of course), it had more or less the same standard equipment as its lesser siblings. Features such as heated seats, orthopedic seats, power rear seats etc were only available as options
300SD W116
A W116 that was only sold in North America, was the diesel-powered 300SD. Introduced in May 1978, it featured a turbo-charged 3.0 L inline-five diesel engine (OM617). With its lower fuel consumption, it should help MB to lessen its overall fuel economy. To make it attractive, it came fully loaded
